Are sugar gliders illegal in California?

yep, the only animals we Californians can have are rats, mice, hamsters, most birds, most lizards, most snakes,cats, dogs (part wolf is fine as long as it's less then 45% wolf depending where in cali you live, up north it's 75% down south is 50%), rabbits, spiders, hermit , most fresh and salt water fish, turtles, cavies, chinchillas, then there is your farm animals too.. but we wont get into those.
