Non-believers: Are you guarded about your attitudes in public?
Yes, unfortunately, I am forced many times to keep my atheism under wraps. This country still has an overtly religious character, and therefore to be explicit about ones skepticism in religion would be asking for trouble in the area of business or ones social life. It is a sad state affairs when a society becomes so intolerant that a differing opinion in one matter would have repercussions on how people treat you. Yet, that is precisely what goes on in the United States. That is why forums, such as this one, are so important. They impart a certain degree of anonymity so that one is free to express ones views openly, without fear of reprisal. I applaud those who are open about their skepticism in religion in their day to day affairs. I wish I had even a scintilla of their courage.
