Are some ideas so simple they don't need a patent?

While camping a couple of months ago I came up with a great idea for a way to modify an existing product that I was using. I looked online from a consumer's standpoint to see if I could find anybody else who was selling this product as I had imagined it, and couldn't find anything like it. I then created a prototype that works as well as I had imagined and hoped it would, and have just started learning about patents and the patenting process. I have since also done a Google patent search and a uspto.gov search and couldn't find any mention of this component of product modification there either. Problem is, while doing a little more research into the general way that this product is made, I came across a tutorial site that gave using my modification as an option, even though like I said I have never seen this product sold with this option. I am a little bummed and wondering how to proceed from here. I already had came up with a name and logo for my product and everything. Are some non-technological ideas/modifications so simple that they are fair game for anybody to create and try to market? I envisioned my product would mainly be sold through a website and festivals but I'm sure if it was on the shelves in stores next to what is available out there now it would be very popular!
